Hair and Makeup Tips to Look Your Best on Camera from a Professional HMUA

We teamed up with professional hair and makeup artist Consuelo T. Lopez of CTL Artistry, she has been working and teaching as a HMUA for over 20 years. Today she’ll be covering the basic you need to know when working with an HMUA.

Why hire a professional hair and makeup artist for your video production?

  1. It’s one less thing to worry about. Any shoot day is a busy day. Making sure you’re looking your best is one of the most reassuring reasons to hire an experienced HMUA.

  2. Tame flyaways, reduce shine, balance redness are all things your HMUA will make sure are taken care of.

  3. Continuity is very important in video production and changes in wardrobe or hair or makeup are very noticable on camera. They make sure all that is consistent and looking good.

Finding the Right Hair and Makeup Artist for your Production

Finding a great HMUA for your video shoot is an important step in making your production a success.

Here’s some quick tips for finding the right one for you.

  1. Ask your network, you’ll likely have a production company, they will make a great resource.

  2. If asking your network doesn’t pan out finding a provider online is definitely a good option.

  3. Find someone that showcases similar work to what you’re looking for.

  4. Don’t be afraid to ask for a pre-call with them and send some reference images.

What does camera ready mean?

  1. A light layer of foundation. This is recommended for men and women.

  2. Groomed and styled hair, but avoid any high maintenance styles like curls.

  3. A bit of powder works to avoid any unintended shine.

  4. Any makeup applied should be matte or mattifying especially in the T zone.

What to bring to your video shoot

  1. Bring anything that you may need or touch up.

  2. Makeup you used, powder and oil paper if you have them.

  3. Lip color you used and hairspray.

What to avoid before your shoot

  1. Drastic changes to your hair color or style.

  2. Harsh facial peels or exfoliants.

  3. Home gray-away coloring.

Get plenty of rest and drink lots of water to make sure you look and feel confident too!
